CURIOUS STRANGER

Albania immersion
Our 2023 Albania trip with my husband's family (their home country) and our children inspired this whole blog. In the post below I introduce our 10-day itinerary, that focussed on enjoying the beautiful nature Albania can offer, including azure sea and wild mountains. Albania has so much history and culture to offer too, but all that for later, maybe...
Practical information
How to get to Albania?
-
by air: The major international airport of Albania is Tirana International Airport, located 17km Northwest of Tirana. It is served by 18 airlines and close to a 100 flight daily from many European counties. Kukes Airport is a much smaller international airport in the North with only a few arrivals per day. A new airport closes to Vlorë in the south is scheduled to open in 2024. Alternatively, you can fly to Corfu and take a ferry to Sarandë.
-
by car or bus: You can of course drive from any of neighbouring countries: Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece. These are scenic but slow routes.
-
by boat: There are various ferries connecting Albania to Italy and Greece
Language
-
The official language is Albanian
-
English and Italian are the most widely spoken foreign languages. The former is taught in schools and is more popular among the younger generation, while 30+ers picked up the latter from Italian satellite television that they unofficially accessed during the communist era.
Currency
-
The local currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). Conversion is easy: In 2023 1 euro is worth approximately 100 lek. You can check actual conversion rates here.
